Journalists protest against assault by Navy Commander

Journalists staged a protest in Fort today against the commander of the Navy after he was accused of assaulting a journalist.

The journalist was allegedly assaulted when he was covering a protest by employees of the Hambantota port.

Navy Commander, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne denied assaulting the journalist but the Government launched an investigation over the incident.

Wijegunaratne led a navy operation to clear the protesters who had prevented ships from entering and leaving the port.

The Navy Commander was seen assaulting a journalist despite the journalist repeatedly saying he was from the media.

Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said this week that there was a concern over the conduct of the Navy Commander since he was not in uniform.

However he said the Government will await the outcome of an ongoing investigation into the incident before commenting further. (Colombo Gazette)
