UN Committee demands probe on Sisira Mendis

The UN Committee against Torture has demanded an investigation on the allegations against ?former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Sisira Mendis.

Mendis was part of the Sri Lankan delegation at the last session of the?UN Committee against Torture which concluded today, when Sri Lanka was examined.

The Committee today said it was shocked at the presence of Sisira Mendis as part of the Sri Lankan delegation.

Mendis was head of the CID under the former Government when the CID was accused of torture in a UN investigations report.

In a detailed report on Sri Lanka released today, the UN Committee against Torture called on the Government to provide detailed information on the role?Mendis played when the allegations of torture were raised against the CID. (Colombo Gazette)
