Government insists no attempt to suppress the media

10_12_07_media_protest_01_65732_438The Government today insisted there was no attempt to suppress the media through new regulations.

Media Minister Gayantha Karunatillake said that the Government will however ensure the media reports on issues affecting the public.

He said that Sri Lanka has seen an improvement in international ratings on media freedom.

Karunatillake said that while clarifications have been sent to the media on some reports, no journalist has been killed or abducted by the current Government.

It has been proposed to establish an independent commission to regulate the contents of news published in print media, broadcasting media (radio and television), and registered websites.

The move is aimed at promoting professionalism and ethics securing the free, independent and plurality media culture.

Karunatillake says nothing will be forced on the media and that everything will be done through discussions. (Colombo Gazette)
