Court extends remand of 11 Tamil Nadu fishermen

A local court today extended till December 9, the remand of 11 Tamil Nadu fishermen, arrested for allegedly fishing in the island nation’s territorial waters, the Press Trust of India reported.

The Oorkavalthurai court, extended the judicial custody of the fishermen till December 9, Rameswaram Fishermen’s Association President P Sesuraja said.

The 11 fishermen from this island town were arrested on November 18, by the Sri Lankan Navy, while they were fishing near Neduntheevu and lodged in Yalpanam prison there, he said. The naval personnel had also taken away their two mechanised boats, he added.

Leading underworld figure and suspected drug lord killed

The Police Special Task Force (STF) shot dead a?leading underworld figure and suspected drug lord during an exchange of gunfire in Wattala today. The Police said that the underworld figure identified as ?D. Manju? was killed when a van was searched by the STF in the Wattala area today. According to the Police an individual in the van had opened fire resulting in the STF retaliating with gunfire in which the?underworld figure was killed. Investigations are underway.
