Proposal to ban sale of cigarettes near schools

A proposal has been made to ban the sale of cigarettes near schools, the Health Ministry said.

Health Minister, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said that a proposal has been made to ban the sale of tobacco products within 500 meters of a school.

Already the sale of liquor is banned near schools and Senaratne said that he has proposed a?ban on the sale of?cigarettes near schools as well.

The Minister recalled that several measures have already been taken to discourage smoking. He said that increasing the tax on?cigarettes and making pictorial warnings on cigarette packs mandatory are part of such measures. (Colombo Gazette)
