The appointment of 350 jail guards have been suspended as per instructions of Minister of Prison Reforms, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs, D.M. Swaminathan following complaints made to the Minister regarding corruption and bribery charges.

Many persons including members of parliament have complained to the Minister in this regard.

In this backdrop, Minister Swaminathan has issued instructions to carry out a proper investigation into the bribery allegations and to take action against such officials if they are found guilty.

The Minister also stated that the second interview with regard to the recruitment of jail guards will be held again to fill the vacancies, as per the due procedure. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. Low and Middle level people are interested in politics due to jobs. Jobs means life not for one but for a family unit and better social empowerment. I understand that in certain certain State organisations like Peoples Bank, Bank of Ceylon, Railways , the first preference is to employees ,children ,spouses and remaining few to some connected people. There are three or four members of one family working in the same organisation that too in the same buildings, stations, holding key positions. How can these organisations talk about social empowerment and corporate Social responsibility.People are watching how vacancies are filled which is a key factor in voters deciding whom to vote. I salute 1970 Srimavo’s government giving jobs equally to all electorates. That’s why we see now a strong Middle class voter base to SLFP and a larger social empowerment. This is reflected in electorates like Maharagama,Homagama,Kelaniya etc.
