No traditional group photograph with the President

There was no traditional group photograph of the new cabinet with President Maithripala Sirisena today. The new cabinet took oaths before the President individually in a room at the Presidential Secretariat. The cabinet then met for a brief cabinet meeting with the President and left. In the past the President has posed with the Prime Minister and new cabinet after a new cabinet is appointed. However this time it was clear the dust had not settled following a deep rift between the President

Ravi Karunanayake gets a Ministry despite concerns

Former Minister Ravi Karunanayake was appointed a Minister in the new cabinet despite concerns raised by civil society. Karunanayake was appointed as the new Minister of Power and Energy and Enterprise Development today. Karunanayake had been accused in the Central Bank treasury bond scam and had been removed earlier from the Finance Minister post. He also resigned from the post of Foreign Minister as a result of the allegations against him and was not considered for a post since then.

Arjun Aloysius admitted to prison hospital

Perpetual Treasuries Limited (PTL) owner Arjun Aloysius has been admitted to the prison hospital. Aloysius is currently in remand over the treasury bond scam. He was admitted to hospital after suffering from a fever. (Colombo Gazette)
