New Act to strengthen coast guard activities

A new Act is to be introduced to strengthen the Department of Coast Guard and give it more powers.

The task expected from the Department of Coast Guard which has been established by the Act no. 41 of 2009, is seen difficult to be performed within its present institutional structure.

Accordingly, considering the timely needs, a?proposal made by President Maithripala Sirisena, in his capacity as the Minister of Defence, to prepare a new Act by repealing the Act no. 41 of 2009, to establish the Department of Coast Guard department as a more powerful law enforcing authority, has been?approved by the Cabinet of Ministers. Twelve firearms recovered from Homagama during raid

One suspect has been arrested with a stock of firearms in Homagama. Officials from the Police Special Task Force (STF) have recovered 12 T- 56 firearms from the suspect?s possession. The weapons were recovered during a raid conducted by the STF in the Pitipana area in Homagama. (Colombo Gazette)
