Kalpitiya OIC transferred following violence during protest

The Officer In Charge (OIC) of the Kalpitiya police has been transferred with immediate effect following the violent clashes which erupted in?Kalpitiya yesterday.

The police Special Task Force (STF) had tightened security in Kalpitiya following the?violent clash between fishermen in the area.

Fishermen staged a protest in?Kalpitiya yesterday?against the use of illegal fishing nets.

The fishermen blocked the streets and protested resulting in a severe traffic block.

A clash broke out during the protest resulting in damage to property and injuries.

The police said that seven?boats, a lorry and a motorcycle were set on fire during the clash. (Colombo Gazette)

Police arrest over 1500 people for violating curfew

The Police have arrested over 1700 people for violating a Police curfew over the weekend. The Police said that 1,754 people were arrested between 6.00 p.m. on Friday to 06.00 a.m. today (23) for violating the curfew.
