ITCZ brings heavy rain, wind and lightning over Sri Lanka

Lightning-in-Srilanka-HDTV-1080Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), the low pressure zone where the Northern and Southern hemispheric winds meet, is affecting the weather over the island.

As a result showery weather with lightning activity can be expected over the island, especially during the afternoon and night, the Department of Meteorology said today.

It said that showers or thundershowers will occur in most parts of the island after 2.00 p.m.

Showers may occur in the Western and Southern provinces and in the Puttalam district, in the morning.

Fairly heavy falls (about 75-100 mm) are also likely at some places.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces.

There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers. The general public advised to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity. (Colombo Gazette)
