MPs accuse media of distorting Parliament proceedings

Several Government Ministers today accused some media of distorting Parliament proceedings.

State Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewardene said that one newspaper had today misreported a statement he had tabled in Parliament.

Wijewardene urged the newspaper to report the correct facts and not practice tabloid journalism.

The issue was over a news report on the use of Air Force helicopters by Government Ministers without paying the cost.

Wijewardene insisted that he never stated in his response to a question raised in Parliament yesterday that several Government Ministers used Air Force helicopters without paying for it.

Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne told Parliament that it seemed all the newspapers were misled by some individual as all had reported the same story.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that Speaker Karu Jayasuriya must look into the issue and direct the media on how to report Parliament proceedings.

However Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that it was unfair for the media to be accused over what was reported. (Colombo Gazette)
