Wreckage of ?Valampuri? located north of Point Pedro

The wreckage of the ?Valampuri? passenger ferry, which was sunk by the LTTE in 1998, has been located north of Point Pedro.

The Navy said that on information received from a civilian diver, a fresh underwater search was carried out by Navy divers and the wrecked of the passenger ferry was located 8 nautical miles north of Point Pedro at a depth of 15 meters.

?Valampuri? was destroyed by an LTTE suicide boat on 23rd?February 1998 off Point Pedro when it?was returning from Trincomalee.

Twenty naval personal were killed during the confrontation. Attempts to search for the vessel were not successful due to rough sea conditions and the volatile security conditions which prevailed in the area during that time. (Colombo Gazette)
