Attempt to smuggle sea cucumber to Sri Lanka busted

About 200 kg of sea cucumber, an endangered coral reef species, which was meant to be smuggled to Sri Lanka was seized at Mandapam near?Rameswaram in India?and two youths were arrested in this connection, the Press Trust of India reported.

Acting on a tip-off, Marine police personnel seized the dried sea cucumber stocked by two persons, with the intention to smuggle them to Sri Lanka, the Marine police said.

The duo has been arrested, they added.?Sea cucumbers, classified as endangered species and their harvest banned under the Wildlife Protection Act, are in demand in South-East Asian countries.
