Government rejects demands of “extremists” in North

09The Government today rejected the demands put forward by “extremists” in the North.

State Defence Minister Ruwan Wijewardene said that the demonstration staged in Jaffna yesterday had the support of some extremist groups.

He said that the demonstration was also seen as opposing reconciliation as it came at a time the Government was attempting to unite the country.

Wijewardene said that the organisers of the demonstration were attempting to spread extremism in the North.

He said the Government will not agree to the demands of the organisers of the demonstration, especially to withdraw the army from the North.

Wijewardene said that people like Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran who took part in the demonstration, can make any demand but the Government will continue with its reconciliation process. (Colombo Gazette)
