Cops to get tough with drunk drivers

The police are to get tough with drunk drivers from today, police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said. He said that yesterday two accidents had been reported in which three people were killed and several injured and in both accidents the drivers were drunk. The police also said that there has been a rise in reports of bus and lorry drivers being behind the wheel while being drunk. Top cops ordered in court over abductions

The Appeals Court in Colombo issued summons today on the police including IGP N.K. Illangakoon over a petition filed by the family members of two missing people. The Young Lawyer?s Association said that the family members of the two people who went missing last November in Biyagama and Mattakuliya, had filed the petition after an attempt to seek government assistance had failed. UPFA wins the East but loses seats

The United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) won the elections in the eastern province, but by just a small margin. Final results released by the department of elections shows that the UPFA had secured 14 seats including two bonus seats by winning 31.58 percent of the total votes.
