President asked to make detailed response to allegations

MaithripalaTransparency International Sri Lanka has noted with concern the recent media allegations published by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) against President Maithripala Sirisenaagainst President Maithripala Sirisena.

The allegations connect Snowy Mountain Engineering Company (SMEC), an engineering company headquartered in Melbourne, Australia with alleged requests for “political donations” connected to President Maithripala Sirisena dating from 2009 (prior to assuming the Presidency).

Transparency International said the commitment to strengthen anti-corruption efforts underpins President Sirisena’s yahapalanaya (good governance) mandate.

Furthermore, given the need for responsibility to be taken for the actions of those working under his control, Transparency International Sri Lanka requested President Sirisena to urgently provide a detailed response to the allegations put forward.

President Maithripala Sirisena had yesterday instructed the Attorney General to look into the allegations raised against him by the Australian media.

The President rejected any involvement in the incident which is said to have taken place when he was the Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Services.

President Sirisena emphasizes that during his political career, he had never indulged in any form of corruption or malpractice or encouraged such activity. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. It is a joke for TI to talk about this. I understand that Sri Lanka TI Chapter is accused of corruption by its staff.

  2. How can MS say he has never indulged in malpractice when a few years ago he rescued his son from being charged over the issue of beating up a police officer’s son at a beach resort. Can anyone remember that? Wasn’t that malpractice? I thought that he would let his son spend a few days in jail. Unfortunately, I was wrong. From that day, I have had zero respect for MS.

    • MR rescued him and the rest who were around him. That was his MRs mistake. Now all trying to be saints we should still respect and forgive MS as the country’s elected leader. There are always people who give extras and people who take as a tradition. Try to get a thing done without.
