Indian fishermen arrested

Sri Lankan Naval personnel allegedly attacked some fishing boats and arrested 23 Tamil Nadu fishermen when they were fishing near Katchatheevu in the Palk Straits today, Tamil Nadu fisheries department officials said. The Sri Lankan Navy also seized five boats, officials said. The fishermen would be produced before the Mannar Judicial Magistrate court, they said. PC polls on September 8

The Elections Department announced that elections to the Eastern, North Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces will be held on September 8 this year. Courts close in protest

Work at almost all the courts around the country came to a standstill today in protest over allegations that government Minister Rishard Badhudeen had threatened a judge in Mannar.
