Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy has urged Union Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj to take steps for the release of four fishermen from the Union Territory who are lodged in a Sri Lankan jail after being arrested in the high seas over a fortnight ago, The Hindu newspaper reported.
In a letter, Narayanasamy also sought Swaraj’s help in securing the release of the boats that were seized by the Sri Lankan Coast Guard.
The Chief Minister said the fishermen from Karaikal region of Puducherry in T.R. Pattinam fishermen hamlet had gone for fishing last week near Rameswaram when they were attacked by Sri Lankan Coast Guard and arrested.
Recalling that during a recent meeting with Ms. Swaraj he had raised concerns over the harassment by Sri Lankan Naval forces and Coast Guard of Indian fishermen under the guise of transgression of maritime limits, Mr. Narayanasamy appealed to the Minister for appropriate measures in this matter.
