Bus accident injures 40

At least 40 people were injured when a bus veered off the road and met with an accident in Kebithigollawa this morning. Police spokesman SSP Priyashantha Jayakody said that the accident occurred along the Padaviya-Kebathigolawa main road. The bus which was taking a group of people to Mannar from Trincomalee, after a wedding function veered off the road and toppled injuring the passengers in the vehicle. Grenade explosion kills child, another injured

A grenade explosion in the north this evening has killed one child and injured another person, police sources said. The explosion had?occurred?when the child in Mullaitivu had found the grenade and was playing with it. The injured person is?receiving?treatment in hospital.

Tangalle boat hijackers deported from Australia

The 14 asylum seekers who allegedly hijacked a ship off the Sri Lankan coast in a bid to reach Australia have been found and sent home, the Australian Department of Immigration said. The group of Sri Lankan nationals was detected and intercepted northwest of the Cocos Islands by Australian authorities late on Thursday.
