The rally was a culmination of a five day walk which began in Peradeniya last week with the participation of hundreds of opposition members and supporters.
Speaking at the final leg of the walk today, Rajapaksa said that the walk was a historic event as a huge number of opposition supporters had turned up.
Rajapaksa said that the walk is part of opposition efforts to remove the current Government led by President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The protest focused on several issues including the cost of living, a proposed agreement to be signed with India and a war crimes investigation.
Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa said that the Government has launched a political witch-hunt against the opposition.
Namal Rajapaksa, who was recently arrested over fraud allegations but was later freed on bail, said that the government is misleading the public through its investigations on former government members. (Colombo Gazette)
