The President said that while the United National Party (UNP) and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) had earlier decided to work together for only two years, it has now been decided they will remain in the Government for five years.
The President expressed this view while speaking at a function in Polonnaruwa today.
“Two weeks ago the UNP and SLFP met and decided we will reverse the earlier decision to work together in the Government till December 2017 and instead work together for five years,” he said.
The President said the cohabitation Government will identify the economic and development issues of the country and work to address those issues.
Sirisena said that the public have given the Government a mandate and the Government must ensure that mandate is met.
The President also dismissed street protests being staged by the opposition against the Government.
“No matter what happens this Government cannot be shaken,” he said.
He said the Constitution allows the Government to run its full term and political conspiracies will not be able to change that. (Colombo Gazette)
