Joint opposition begins protest march, ambulance attacked

UntitledThe joint opposition began a protest march from Peradeniya today to draw public attention to concerns over the government.

Large crowds attended the rally led by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa which will culminate in Colombo on August 1st.

The ‘Pada Yatra’ protest march was to begin in the Kandy town but had to be shifted to Peradeniya following a court order.

During the march an ambulance which was attempting to get through the crowd was attacked damaging the side mirror of the vehicle.

Rajapaksa said that the public are suffering in many ways as a result of the actions of the current government.

He said that unemployment is one of the issues faced by the public and the government has failed to address this.

As a result, he says the joint opposition decided to take to the streets and stage a walk to demand attention to the issues faced by the people.

Former Minister and joint opposition member Kumara Welgama said that the protest was a success despite attempts by the government to block it.

Welgama said that by the time the protest march reaches Colombo he expects the crowd to be well over the expected number. (Colombo Gazette)
