UNP insists no political interference in judiciary

The United National Party (UNP) today insisted that there is no political interference in the decisions taken by the judiciary.

UNP parliamentarian?Harshana Rajakaruna said that the former Government often had a hand in the decisions taken by court.

He recalled that any judge who failed to tow the line of the former Government was removed from office.

However he assured the current Government does not interfere in the judiciary and will not act like the former Government.

The parliamentarian was reacting to the Supreme Court decision yesterday to temporarily suspend the increase on the Value Added Tax (VAT). (Colombo Gazette)
