Traders in Matara close shops and protest against VAT increase

Traders in Matara closed their shops today and staged a protest against the recent VAT increase.

Day-to-day activities in Matara were affected with the closure of most shops in the Matara town.

The owners of the shops took to the streets and staged a protest demanding that the increase on the VAT be reversed.

Similar protests were staged in other parts of the country as well over the past few days.?(Colombo Gazette)

Former Maldives President Nasheed arrested

Police have taken former president Mohamed Nasheed into custody after the Hulhumale Magistrate Court ordered the Police to produce him in court for a hearing on Wednesday of his trial over the arrest and subsequent detention of Chief Criminal Judge Abdulla Mohamed.
