CID and army investigating cause of Kosgama fire and explosions

Kosgama Salawa campPrime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the army are investigating the cause of the fire and explosions at the Kosgama army camp.

He told Parliament today that the Security Council met and discussed the incident and what needs to be done next.

The Prime Minister said the focus right now is to identify the cause of the fire which led to the explosions at the armoury at the Salawa army camp in Kosgama.

He said once the cause is identified then the next step will be taken and a comprehensive statement will be issued.

The Prime Minister also said that the armoury was not fully equipped to prevent a major disaster in the event of an accident.

He said the police special task force is now in the process of clearing explosives thrown out from the camp as a result of the force of the blasts.

The Prime Minister said the Government has taken measures to assist the families affected by the incident. (Colombo Gazette)
