MOD briefs President on incident involving Eastern Province CM

E1M1-20-05-2016The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has briefed President Maithripala Sirisena on the incident involving Eastern Province Chief Minister Nazeer Ahamed.

Defence Secretary Karunasena Hettiarachchi said the President was briefed over the incident after it was brought to his notice by the Navy.

The Eastern Province Chief Minister had verbally abused a Navy officer in public at an event held last week during the opening ceremony of a science lab and computer unit at the Sampur Maha Vidyalayam.

US Ambassador Atul Keshap was a guest at the event while Governor of the Eastern Province, Austin Fernando was the Chief Guest.

Television footage showed the Chief Minister verbally abusing the Navy officer on stage at the event after accusing him of failing to understand protocol.

During the incident a child was also seen accidentally hit by the hand of the Chief Minister who even accused the Governor of failing to follow protocol.

It was reported that the Chief Minister was angry over the failure by the organisers of the event to initially invite him on stage to present gifts to the children. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. The behaviour of the Eastern Province Chief Minister at the Sampoor School function was arrogant and NOT called for. Moreover, as an important political representative of the district, the Chief Minister’s actions have to be condoned severely. The worst part is, the manner in which the Chief Minister addressed the Navy Officer who was supposed to have been the compere, calls for severe disciplinary action at the highest level. If President Maithripala Sirisena will fall back on this, just for the purpose to make sure that the Chief Minister has a large Muslim vote bank (which he does NOT have in Trincomalee district) in the East/Trincomalee district, then we Muslims will NOT vote for the President any more, because, the behaviour of the Chief Minister towards the Navy Captain is a DISGRACE to the Sri Lanka Muslim Community in at large and especially that of the Eastern Province. The Navy should also set-in-motion “civil action/legal proceedings” against the Chief Minister for disgracing and abusing a government official and that too an armed forces officer in public and claim at least Rs. 10 million in damages for his pain of mind. To us, the Naval Officer (Captain) is a “HERO”. Taking this opportunity, on behalf of the Sri Lankan Muslim Community, THE MUSLIM VOICE wish to tender our sincere APOLOGIES to the Navy Officer (Captain) and the Sri Lanka Navy and are very proud of the officer’s discipline in maintaining PATIENCE and CALM throughout the episode, in front of foreign dignitaries and a large local gathering whom the Navy Officer has been making his “YEOMAN” service in Sampoor. Did NOT this IDIOT of a Chief Minister know, that if NOT for the great sacrifices made by the Navy and the triforces, where the hell would he have been today, just an ordinary businessman living in Borella, Colombo.

  2. Mr.Nazeer, give respect and get respect.Whatever the problem, one can solve it in a friendly manner, instead shouting in harsh words is not at all acceptable.Further you always boast that you equally develope all the areas of the east, whereas you only help to develope the areas of muslims. If you are genuine can you announce in public the money spent by the eastern province council to develope each district.Since the goverment turned a blind eye towards your activities, you took the upper hand thinking that nobody will challenge you.We are closely watching your activities. At least from today, without biased by race and religion, carry out your work equally developing all areas.

  3. It is sad to see such dishonorable behavior displayed at a school function. Power can take one to a position but it is consistency of character that would enable one to retain it.
Sad to see such errant behavior that impacts all the Muslims of Sri Lanka.
I do hope that the CM will have the presence of mind to make a public apology to the Governor, Navy Officer concerned & to the School.
