Sri Lanka seeks foreign help as flood, landslide death toll rises

MangalaThe Government today sought urgent foreign assistance as the death toll from the floods and landslides rose and the number of displaced also increased.

The death toll from the landslide in Aranayake alone reached 58 today and around 144 people are still missing.

Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera briefed the diplomatic community on the disaster situation and on the urgent requirements.

Minister of Disaster Management Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne also took part in the discussion.

Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa told the diplomats that food and clothing was available but Sri Lanka needed assistance in other forms to help the affected families, including purification pills.

Samaraweera said that several countries have shown keen interest to help Sri Lanka in this hour of need. (Colombo Gazette)
