Sri Lanka seeks foreign help as flood, landslide death toll rises

The Government?today sought urgent?foreign assistance?as the death toll from the floods and landslides?rose and the number of displaced also increased.

The death toll from the landslide in Aranayake alone reached 58 today and around 144 people are still missing.

Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera briefed the diplomatic community on the disaster situation and on the urgent requirements.

Minister of Disaster Management Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne also took part in the discussion.

Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa told the diplomats that food and clothing was available but Sri Lanka needed assistance in other forms to help?the affected families, including purification pills.

Samaraweera said that several countries have shown keen interest to help Sri Lanka in this hour of need. (Colombo Gazette)

Party organised using FB raided in Avissawella

A part organised using Facebook was raided in Avissawella and 25 youth were arrested for the possession and use of illegal drugs. The Avissawella Police conducted the raid on the party at a hotel in Thambiliyana in Avissawella. The Police seized 1315mg of heroin, 525 g of Ice and 10g 210mg of Cannabis. Young woman, two children killed as tree falls on temporary shelter

A young woman and two children were killed when a tree fell on a temporary shelter in Welimada. The Police said that the tree fell on the temporary shelter near the Welimada Pradeshiya Sabha. Four people were injured in the incident and admitted to hospital. The Police said that three of them had succumbed to their injuries.
