BJP uses Sri Lankan image to claim malnutrition in Kerala

BJP picIndia’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been accused of using an image of a Sri Lankan refugee and claiming it is of a malnourished child in Attapady, in Kerala.

At an election rally, BJP president Amit Shah had flashed a copy of the magazine Outlook, dated July, 2013, which carried a cover story on the death of tribal children in Attapady.

However, local news portals have claimed that the image the magazine used on the cover showing a woman holding an under nourished child, is not a child in Kerala but in Sri Lanka, India.com reported.

The photograph reportedly featured in a 2009 US State Department report to Congress detailing ‘Incidents during the Recent Conflicts in Sri Lanka’.

According to a report by the Indian Express, the US report features the image on page 64, with the caption- ‘Photo taken on May 6 of a malnourished baby in the NFZ’.

It further says that the photo was taken in the North in Sri Lanka in 2009, when the country was in the throes of a bloody war against the LTTE.

However, Outlook had committed a huge blunder by featuring the image along with their cover story on malnourishment amongst tribal kids in Attapadi.

The magazine had carried the image with the caption- ‘A 3-month old infant at a camp in Attapady before he passed away’. (Colombo Gazette)
