Mannar court extends remand of Tamil Nadu fishermen till May 25

The Mannar court?today extended till May 25 the judicial custody of 21 fishermen from Thangachimadam and Pamban in Tamil Nadu, who were arrested last month, S Emirite, President of the Rameswaram fishermen’s organisation said, according to Outlook India.

The fishermen were arrested and three country boats seized by Sri Lankan navy personnel on April 27 off Katchatheevu islet on charges of crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line.

Katchatheevu was ceded to Sri Lanka by India by two agreements of 1974 and 1976.

The fishermen were lodged at the Vavunia prison after being produced in a court in Mannar for the second hearing. The magistrate extended their remand till May 25, Emerit said. (Colombo Gazette)

Three Sri Lankans held for trying to smuggle ganja

The Q Branch police in India have arrested three Sri Lankan Tamils, including two refugees, when they attempted to smuggle 11 kg of ganja from Thonikarai seashore near Mandapam, The Hindu newspaper reported today. Asgiriya Chief Prelate questions North CM?s demand

The Chief Prelate of the Asgiriya Chapter, the Venerable Galagama Attadassi Thera, has questioned the demand by the Chief Minister of the Northern Province C V Wigneswaran, that the army should be withdrawn from Jaffna. The Venerable Galagama Attadassi Thera said that the Government must be wise when responding to such demands and ensure that Sri Lanka remains united under one National flag. The Chief Prelate said this when he met Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who is on a visit to Kandy.
