The Canadian Government under a financial envelope of 6 Million Canadian Dollars has partnered with two UN agencies, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), to strengthen agro economic development in the North of Sri Lanka, with a specific focus on the districts of Jaffna, Killinochchi and Mullaitivu.

During the two day visit, the High Commissioner is scheduled to visit four Canadian-funded dairy and agriculture based Cooperatives and their members supported by UNDP and FAO under the ‘Agro-Economic Development Project’.

These Cooperatives have received much needed technological and managerial/business support to recover after the decades of conflict and sustain their livelihoods whilst contributing towards the development of the growing Northern economy.

Through the Agro-Economic Development Project’ it is expected to benefit over 11,000 households across Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu. The Mission will meet with Cooperative members and Government officials and hand over the completed infrastructure to the communities during their visit.

The Canadian Government continues to have a strong and longstanding partnership with the United Nations and is the third largest donor of UNDP Sri Lanka. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. It is unfortunate Canada is going to fund for Northern development in Sri Lanka. Still there are hundred of thousands Canadians who have red-white Health cards without a photo on it. Many foreigners and illegal people use this card to get free Canadian medical facilities putting weight on Canadian tax payers.
Major parts of this 6 million Canadian dollars will go to consultants, vehicles and buildings and a peanut will be used for actually to the development.

  2. The money could have been better spent than promoting a belching farting animal industry. It’s the same as UK that does not have ID cards but insist that the rest of Commonwealth and EU have one..
Even at China the lactose prone society the west has been promoting milk drinking. The net result along with Mcdonald’s salt the children are getting obese like the Yankees .
On the other hand most of us in the West are turning to Soya Milk the Chinese drink to keep our sugar and fat levels low.
Agro industry is what is needed non GM crops to bumble bee making and exporting to name a few. The Dutch should have been invited because they are horticulture industry experts. The resources are many in the island but would the army and hegel eggheads let the the civilians run their lives civilians- jealousy we saw in the 70’s when the north grew chili and onion??
