Mahinda’s army security withdrawn and replaced with STF

The army security detail of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was?withdrawn today and replaced with the police Special Task Force.

Rajapaksa said that?50 army personnel assigned for him had been withdrawn. He said that the police personnel assigned to him are not trained on VVIP security.

Rajapaksa’s media unit said that the former President’s life is under threat as he defeated the world’s most powerful terrorist organization, the LTTE.

“This has been understood even by the general public. Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa is the only living leader in the world who defeated a powerful terrorist organization. Therefore it is the public opinion that Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa should be given proper military protection,”?Rajapaksa’s media unit said.

His media unit further noted that the withdrawal of 50 well-trained army personnel has placed the life of the former President in danger and that it is the duty of the Government to provide sufficient military protection to safeguard his?life. (Colombo Gazette)

IOM plans more assistance to flood and landslide-hit Sri Lanka

The UN Migration Agency IOM said Tuesday that it plans to provide 3,700 shelter repair kits, 5,000 non-food relief item kits and 250 temporary shelters to assist the worst flood-affected areas in Sri Lanka, the Xinhua news agency reported. IOM said it would seek funding from the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund, and the intervention would help an estimated 74,750 people. Heavy flooding, landslides and flash floods have affected some 684,000 people in south and central Sri Lanka.
