Chinese PM to visit Sri Lanka next year to sign FTA

Li KeqiangSri Lanka and China hope to finalise a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of this year and sign it next year during a visit to Sri Lanka by Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang.

Speaking to reporters in Colombo today on his just concluded visit to China, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the agreement will be finalised before the visit by the Chinese Prime Minister to Sri Lanka.

Wickremesinghe said that Sri Lanka and China had laid down an economic strategy for the coming two decades which would help Sri Lanka transform into an international economic hub in the Indian Ocean.

He said that he had held successful talks with the Chinese leaders and appreciated the support received by the Chinese government.

“We held very successful discussions on a range of issues and China is going to be working with us,” he said.

“The economic strategy between Sri Lanka and China for the next two decades has been laid down and since we are going to be the hub of the Indian Ocean there is going to be a significant difference here,” the Prime Minister added.

He further said that both sides had also agreed to resume the Port City project which will be transformed into a special financial and business district.

The project will be part of a megapolis programme which was launched by the Government earlier this year. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. Current Gava-palana Government became a prostitute for Western Countries and now they realised that they got nothing from Westerners; Sri lanka paid millions of dollars to bring all diplomats soon after the winning but Westerners are poorer than Sri Lanka to give anything back to people who conspired. After criticising the previous MR Government for dealing with China MY3 won the election with support of minority parties. Now…. nowhere to go and no money in treasury to pay even pensions. It is pathetic that Sri Lanka is begging again from China after stopping all development projects which costed Sri Lanka billions of dollars for delays. Many in current government stakeholders deserve jail terms when they lose power in parliament for the damage done to Sri Lankan economy during last one year.

  2. Ranil by now should have understood that the Debt trap created by PB Jayasundera and Chinese is now turning into the death trap of the UNP

  3. PRC is second world largest economy, we want that market for trading and investment to double ours GDP next ten years time to come by FTA between
    Sri lanka and PRC.

But UNP leadership of Neo-colonial policy will not in position and not able been to meet such changes by current regime in power.
UNP gang of elites who are behind Ranil W…. all want to undermined National economic development. First UNP has to give-up anti- development policies back by Indian influences by RAW penetration behind the door of State power.
