Security Council decides to replace army with police for VIP security

Karunasena HettiarachchiThe Security Council has decided to replace the army with the police for VIP security, Defence Secretary Karunasena Hettiarachchi said today.

He said that army personnel assigned to the security detail of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be gradually removed and replaced with police personnel.

“Army personnel can’t be used for the civil security purposes without an emergency situation”, Hettiarachchi said.

Addressing the weekly cabinet briefing held at the Government Information Department today Hettiarachchi said the move to remove the army is a result of a decision taken by the Security Council.

He said that it has been decided to assign all VIP protection duties to the Police Department. (Colombo Gazette)
