Cabinet approves compensation for residents set to lose land

ColomboThe cabinet has approved compensation to be paid to residents set to lose their land for development purposes to be carried out in Colombo.

A project is to be launched to control flooding in the Colombo metropolitan area and the suburbs and also develop infrastructure.

The project will cover fifty six sub projects and most of the construction and rehabilitation work proposed under this project will be implemented in main cities and in highly populated areas.

The Government says it has also been decided to acquire private lands for the proposed project activities. A joint proposal made by Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayake and Patali Champika Ranawaka, the Minister of Megapolis and Western Development, to adopt Land Acquisition (Payment of Compensation) Regulations published in the Gazette Extra Ordinary No. 1864/54 dated 30.05.2014 for payment of compensations for affected persons by the project, was approved by the cabinet of Ministers.
