Mahinda RajapaksaParliament was today assured that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be given full security.

Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella said that Rajapaksa has been given 103 soldiers and 103 policemen as security.

The joint opposition raised concerns in Parliament today stating that Rajapaksa’s life was under threat as a result of the decision to remove the army security provided to him.

Kiriella however said that the security of the former President was a responsibility of the Government.

National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa however said that the army security officers who are providing security to Rajapaksa have been given instructions to withdraw.

Kiriella said making public statements that Rajapaksa’s security has been withdrawn will be a threat to his life.

He said he spoke to the relevant officials and he has been informed that Rajapaksa’s security will not be withdrawn.

Kiriella also noted that while the joint opposition is raising concerns over the security of Rajapaksa on the basis that he defeated terrorism, those very Parliamentarians were in the Government when the security of former army commander Sarath Fonseka was withdrawn.

He recalled that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa approved the withdrawal of Fonseka’s security when Fonseka contested against Rajapaksa in the 2010 Presidential election and lost.

Fonseka, meanwhile said that security is provide to a VIP based on the security situation in the country. (Colombo Gazette)
