India to give Mullaitivu fishermen boats and fishing equipment

5545539961_d403ce8cba_bThe Governments of India and Sri Lanka will be signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to supply 150 boats and fishing equipment to fishermen of Mullaitivu.

The Indian High Commission in Colombo said that the MoU will be signed tomorrow at the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development in Colombo.

The MoU will be signed by Y.K. Sinha, the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka and Ms. W.M.M.R. Adikari, Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development in the presence of Mahinda Amaraweera, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development.

Fishermen in the North have been accusing Indian fishermen of poaching in Sri Lankan waters which in turn has affected the livelihood of local fishermen.

Amaraweera had recently said that he will ask the Indian Government to compensate the Northern fishermen. (Colombo Gazette)
