SLMC to meet this week in attempt to resolve party crisis

Hasen AliThe Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) is expected to meet this week in an attempt to resolve a crisis in the party.

SLMC General Secretary Hasen Ali said that a meeting is likely to take place this week during which his powers will be fully restored.

Differences of opinion arose in the party recently after a letter was sent to party leader Rauff Hakeem urging him to change the party constitution. The letter was sent by some members of the SLMC High Command, the main decision making body of the SLMC.

However Hakeem saw the move as an attempt to ignite a coup against him and replace him as the party leader.

Later Ali was a notable absentee at the 19th Grand National Convention of the SLMC held on Saturday, March 19 at Palamunai, Ampara with the participation of the President and the Prime Minister.

Ali was unhappy with his powers being clipped by the party leadership despite being the General Secretary.

He said he did not attend the convention as his powers had been reduced and he could not take some decisions on behalf of the party.

He said that just three days before the convention a meeting was called and Hakeem assured that all the powers earlier in the hands of the party General Secretary will be restored.

However by last weekend those powers were not restored and as a result Ali did not find it fitting to attend the convention in Ampara.

Ali however says another meeting is scheduled to be held this week and he expects the situation to be resolved in the best interest of the party. (Colombo Gazette)
