Sri Lanka willing to accept international actors in war crimes probe

sri-lanka-war-zone-ltteThe Government says it is willing to consider international participation in investigating possible war crimes during the 26-year Tamil insurgency, the Reuters news agency reported.

“I think it is only fair that the victims of the war would want some form of guarantee that the new courts will deliver justice and accountability in a fair manner, and for that we are willing to consider the participation of international actors,” Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera said at a Washington think tank.

President Maithripala Sirisena has previously said that foreign participation was not needed for an impartial inquiry.

The foreign minister’s comments come after the United Nations said earlier this month that it would not force Sri Lanka to accept a role for international judges, but any process must be impartial and independent.

The United Nations says the Sri Lankan military and Tamil Tiger rebels were both likely to have committed war crimes during the war, which ended with a military victory in 2009.

A U.N. resolution calls for all alleged war crimes to be investigated and tried in special courts by international judges.

“They could be judges, they could be forensic experts, investigators, prosecutors, all these options are being looked at,” Samaraweera said.

Many Sri Lankans oppose foreign involvement, and supporters of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa believe the U.N. resolution aims to punish the military unfairly.

Samaraweera said the “contours and the architecture” of the court would be worked on in the next five or six months, after consulting with parties including the Tamil National Alliance.

He said that while the judiciary was on the right track, it had been politicized over the years. (Colombo Gazette)

Foreign Minister implies that justice and accountability can only achieve through international actors. This kind of leaders are curse for Sri Lanka. Who created Tamil armed groups? Who have facilitated and sustained the brutal war for three decades? Isn’t the answer so call ‘International community.’ It is too technical to understand for Tamil and Sinhalese leaders. That is why I believe this country won’t become like Singapore.

    • You ask who created Tamil armed groups. Well the answer and blame for that partly lies with the xenophobic politicians who used racism and nationalism to win elections by making two communities hate and mistrust each other. We still get that brand of politicians in Sri Lanka. We might have never heard of a person called prabhakaran, had we listened to the needs of the tamil people back in the day and come to a peaceful solution.

Instead we had a bloody 30 year civil war. Have some empathy and try to look at the situation from the perspective of the tamil victims. They lost children mothers and fathers. If you were them would you not want to find who killed their loved ones? I’m talking about the people who were forcefully taken away by the army never to be seen again.

The reason we’ll never be a Singapore is because our people have been conditioned to be intolerant and racist. Just look at the uproar that was caused just because the national anthem was sung in Tamil. Its just sad. We’ve been down the nationalistic and racist path for the past 30 years. Lets try something different.

  2. I just can’t believe how immature the Tamil and Sinhalese leaders are. The way the West isolate people like us from the decision making circle is really unbelievable. Look at the Middle East, are you saying that we can’t find decent Arabs who can make a difference? There are decent Arabs, but the West knows how to isolate those intellectuals from the leadership. The powerful West is only 8 percentage of the world. Therefore, the West has to control the 92 percentage of the world. So the West has hidden hand in everywhere to make a mess in order to control. The Chinese are not going to beat the white devils by building factories. The Chinese have to do far more than that to beat them.
