Mahajana Eksath Peramuna leader Dinesh Gunawardena said that the request to recognize the joint opposition as a separate group in Parliament was made under the Standing Orders of Parliament.
However Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said that recognition cannot be given to one group which is already part of a political alliance recognized by Parliament.
He said that the joint opposition must raise the issue with the leader of the United People’s Freedom Alliance, President Maithripala Sirisena.
Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella said that the existing Standing Orders of Parliament does not permit members of the joint opposition to be given recognition as a separate group in Parliament.
The joint opposition however objected the stand taken by the Speaker. (Colombo Gazette)
