Hundreds of livestock killed in Northern floods

Hundreds of livestock have been killed in the floods in the North, reports from the area said. Officials were quoted as saying that in Mullaitivu alone over 1280 cattle, over 600 goats and over 4000 chicken have been killed. The deaths have been recorded by Government officials in the area. Several acres of farm land have also been destroyed by the floods. Thousands of people in the North have been affected by the floods following heavy rains experienced in the area since last week. WPC member arrested over financial fraud

A Western Provincial Council member has been?arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) over alleged financial fraud. The Police said that?Shammuganathan Kuhawarden was arrested for committing financial fraud via a Rs 72 million cheque. He is to be produced before the Mt. Lavinia Magistrate?s Court tomorrow.

Railway strike called off following talks

A railway strike which was scheduled to be launched from midnight tonight, has been called off. Railway trade unions said that the strike was called off following talks held with Transport Minister Arjuna Ranatunga. One of the main issues raised by the?trade unions was salary anomalies. Ranatunga had assured that the matter will be resolved by the end of next month. (Colombo Gazette)
