IGP ordered to pay compensation to assault victim

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) was today ordered to pay compensation to an innocent commuter who was assaulted when the police had attempted to clear protesters at the Fort railway station in 2014.

The IGP was ordered by court to pay the commuter Rs. 50,000 as compensation.?Duminda Hapuarachi had claimed that he was assaulted by the police when he got caught between the police and the mob during the?protest.

Hapuarachi had said at the time that?his wife and children were?in shock after the incident and he had later filed a fundamental rights?case.

Television footage showed Hapuarachi bleeding from his head after the assault and being dragged away by the police despite saying he was in pain and that he was an innocent bystander. (Colombo Gazette)

Suspects arrested over Rathgama murder further remanded
