Government tight–lipped on SF getting National list seat

FonsekaThe Government today refused to comment on moves to give former army commander Sarath Fonseka the vacant National list seat in Parliament.

Leader of the House and United National Party (UNP) Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella said that the most suitable person will get the seat.

The seat became vacant following the demise of M.K.D.S Gunawardena who entered Parliament under the UNP National list following the August 17 Parliament election.

There were reports that Fonseka has been confirmed as the replacement for Gunawardena despite some UNP members opposing the move.

When asked at a press conference today who the replacement will be, Kiriella said that the President and Prime Minister will discuss and decide on the best choice.

He said that the new MP will take oaths on February 9 and added that the person selected will be one who has the full support of the country. (Colombo Gazette)
