Passenger arrested with wallapatta hidden in his baggage

wallapatta-herbs-4A Sri Lankan passenger was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport today with wallapatta hidden in his baggage.

The 38 year old man was arrested at the departure lounge with 32 kgs of wallapatta chips, valued at Rs. 9,600,000.00, concealed in his baggage.

He had attempted to smuggle the chips to Dubai when he was arrested this morning. (Colombo Gazette)


  1. If Wallapatta is such a valuable product, sought after by foreign countries, and is so costly, I don’t understand why the GOSL can’t commence production of this commodity on a commercial basis, through licenses, land & loans given to private entreprenuers, and make it a major export crop, instead of tea, which is not a demand product in the world.
