British war ship in Sri Lanka, boost for defence ties

DEFENDER 2The British war ship HMS Defender is paying a routine visit to Colombo to take on stores and fuel before continuing with her duties in the Indian Ocean.

This is the first time in four years that a RN warship has visited Sri Lanka, a country with which the United Kingdom shares a long military history, the British High Commission in Colombo said.

The British High Commission said the Ship’s visit now is a welcome signal of the closer defence relations the two countries are developing.

HMS Defender is a Type 45 Destroyer, built in the United Kingdom and is one of the world’s most advanced warships.

She is equipped with the Principal Anti Air Missile weapon system, a medium-range gun, close-in weapon systems and carries a maritime helicopter that is equipped to engage surface and sub-surface targets.

While in Sri Lanka the Ship’s company will meet with counterparts from the Sri Lankan Navy and also play them at selected sports. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. When Chinese ships arrived it was a crime, and was used in the election campaign to defeat Rajapaksa. When British and American ships coming, it is for Sri Lanka’s safety and current government thinks Sri Lanka is still a colony of England..

    • Have you gone mad. Srilanka needs not only chinese but Japanese Indian Pakistan British Americans and all other Europeans. The former regime was treading a dangerous path antagonizing these countries. We would have ended up as another Libya Iraq or Syria

    • You really must try to get your history correct . Sri lanka was never a colony of England , not even when it was called Ceylon , I repeat , never in its entire history.

  2. So what if a naval ship comes to Sri Lanka for a goodwill visit, they come on the invitation and with prior permission to come for fuel or stores or goodwill visit so there is no threat or harm to the country and it gives mutual understanding

  3. The Chinese are still coming. The Pakistanis, Japanese, Americans and now the ROYAL NAVY!! Earlier the largest ship of the Indian Navy!! I really don’t know where we are heading, thanks to all that the politicians did in the last five decades.
