Over 359 African elephant tusks destroyed at Galle Face

Sri Lanka Customs today began?destroying more than 359 African elephant tusks (Blood Ivory) in their custody?at Galle Face Green.

The ivory was crushed using a modified crusher and then it is to be transported to the Puttalam cement factory to be burned. The entire process is taking?place with Special Task Force (STF) and the army providing tight security.

According to the Customs Department the symbolic act of destroying more than Rs. 387 million worth of ivory seeks to dispel any hopes by poachers that they will profit by killing elephants.

The tusks destroyed today were?confiscated in 2012 while it was en route to Dubai from Kenya. (Colombo Gazette)

Coronavirus death toll in Sri Lanka rises to 868

The coronavirus death toll in Sri Lanka has risen to 868 today after another 18 deaths were confirmed. The Health Ministry said the latest deaths were reported between the 9th to the 12the of May. The victims are an 82-year-old woman from Wanduramba who had died on 10th May, with the cause of death being reported as Covid pneumonia. More areas placed under isolation from today

More areas have been placed under isolation from today (Thursday), the Government said. Accordingly, Palugahawela in the Divulapitiya Police area in the?Gampaha District, Karadungoda, Goviyapana, Kahawannagama and Dommangoda in the Ahangama Police area and Lanumodara, Bonavista and Katukurunda in the Habaraduwa Police area in the Galle District have been isolated from today.
