JVP insists Government has no mandate to sign CEPA

BimalThe Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today insisted that the Government has no mandate to sign the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with India.

JVP Parliamentarian Bimal Ratnayake said that past governments had attempted to sign the agreement with India but could not do so owing to several protests.

He says now the current government is also attempting to sign the agreement without having the mandate from the public.

Ratnayake said that the CEPA agreement has not been backed by Sri Lankans in the past as it does not favour Sri Lanka.

The Parliamentarian said that while the Indian Government, the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka and some Indian companies in Sri Lanka want the agreement, Sri Lankans are not for it. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. JVP has no political issues to beat about so it takes up anything and everything
with no clarification about it. Of course Voters do not vote for every Agreement
elected Ministers undertake – this is a business of governance.

Free trade between two neighbouring countries has gone on for time memorable, but in current times, Agreements are entered into for necessary
safeguards. Can the JVP point some instances where SL is that badly affected?

  2. Hi- Bimal Ratnayake – You are talking of a Mandate now. You people attacked in 1971 and 1988/89 with a MANDATE? From whom you got the Mandate then. Don’t talk bullshit now.
Grow up man. bye- Nihal Gunatilake

  3. JVP is correct on this matter. Besides why get into an agreement such as CEPA with a third rated country which can’t feed her own people. For your information nearly 400 Million people in India go to sleep without any food every night. Go and figure that out first. If similar agreement was arranged between a developed advanced country we should not be afraid to approve it. Another, factor to be conserved is INDIANS are not trust worthy, there is a huge question about their credibility.
