Jitendra Uduman and his four band-mates had never met before they came together to perform at Tantalize 2015, an all island inter university talent show organised by the Student Activity Club of APIIT Sri Lanka.
Up against two other bands competing in the show, The Odyssey with Uduman on guitar and lead vocals, Previn Wirekoon on drums, Divan Weerasooriya on Bass, Oshan Obeyesekere on Lead guitar and Charini Diddeniya on backing vocals came out on top in the contest held last month.
Three members of Odyssey are students at APIIT while the other two pursue their education at Royal Institute and SLIIT.
The Odyssey positions itself as a folk/alternative rock band and performed their original track, “Funeral in Heaven” in the finals of the talent competition to clinch victory in their category.
Uduman calls winning Tantalize 2015 “a great achievement” for The Odyssey, saying it has opened up new roads for the band. “The win has proven to us that we’ve got what it takes to be a professional band in the future and given us a platform to strive towards new goals which would hopefully include recording original material and further performances in the public eye,” the lead vocalist says.
He says it is remarkable that while none of his band-mates knew each other before coming together to compete in Tantalize 2015. “Winning the Band Category has proven to us that we can work together to achieve our goals. We are dedicated on producing an original sound which is true to our roots and have set our sights on being a contemporary Folk/Alternative Rock Band,” Uduman said.
The Odyssey has their own Facebook Page and can be contacted for performance bookings.
