Three fishermen arrested for poaching in Lankan waters

Indian-fishermenThree Indian fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on Sunday near the Palk Strait in Tamil Nadu, the ANI news agency reported.

The capture comes after the Sri Lankan Government had earlier announced the release of all 104 Indian fishermen from its prisons in view of Pongal.

Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries WMMR Adikari said that concerns have been raised over eight fishermen, who were charged for damaging fishing vessels belonging to Sri Lankan fishermen.

The fishermen issue continues to be a major source of aggravation in the ties between the two nations as Sri Lanka accuses Indian fishermen of straying into its territorial waters, while the latter asserts of fishing in their traditional areas. (Colombo Gazette)
