Speaking at a ceremony to declare open the newly built Bank of Ceylon Welikanda branch today the President said that the special development project titled “Pibidemu Polonnaruwa” (Awakening of Polonnaruwa) was implemented to rectify the injustice which occurred to the people in the Polonnaruwa district during the development process under the former Government.
He also said that even though some sections of society expressed the view that there is a shortage of subsidized fertilizer in the country, when he personally looked into the matter, the actual situation was that there were some issues with the distribution of fertilizer and he has given instructions to the relevant officials to address the issue.
President Sirisena said that the Government will take every possible step to uplift the farming community by expanding market opportunities and providing water and fertilizer required for them at the correct time.
The President also recalled that there are rice stocks in warehouses which are not suitable for human consumption and those stocks were imported by the former Government.
He said that the rice stocks were not sold to Sathosa but instead sold to the private sector and an investigation in this regard is underway. (Colombo Gazette)
